The 10 most popular gin cocktails that you need to try!

In celebration of World Gin Day (and gin in general) we have put together this list of the 10 best, most popular gin cocktails that you need to try. Let’s see if your favourite tipple has made this list!

For this mouthwatering collection of cocktails, we have stuck to classic gin cocktails and cocktails that have been made with gin from the start.

However, if you scroll down to the bottom you will find some gin-credible tipples that have been adapted to suit gin by our Master Mixologist, Maria, and which we think deserve an honourable mention. They include our twists on hugely popular cocktails like a Porn Star Martini (also known as a Passion Fruit Martini), a Piña Colada and a Mojito - possibly the three most popular cocktails in the world, one of which is traditionally made with vodka and two of which are traditionally made with rum.

How do we know which cocktails are the most popular?

We recently sent a survey out to our fabulous Craft Gin Club members to see what their favourite cocktails are. They answered in their hundreds and we then counted up the results and, hey presto, the most popular cocktails were revealed.

If you want to learn how to make the gin cocktails you see, just click on the links as you go and the gin cocktail recipes will be revealed.

The 10 most popular gin cocktails:

Bramble

Why is it so popular?

Refreshing and berry-licious, this mix of gin, crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur), lemon juice and simple syrup simply looks as utterly gorgeous as it tastes. With that two-tone mix of rich purple and clear, icy, crispness, it never fails to strike a chord with those gin fans who love a bit of theatre.

Negroni

Classic Negroni gin cocktail

Why is it so popular?

Thought to have been invented in Florence in 1919 for Pascal Olivier Count de Negroni, who wanted to strengthen his Americano cocktail with gin, this wonderfully bittersweet tipple is a simple mix of gin, Campari and red vermouth (we recommend Punt E Mes). The popularity of this classic gin cocktail never seems to wane because of that rich history and unique, debonair flavour profile - long may it continue!

Espresso Martini

Classic gin Espresso Martini cocktail

Why is it so popular?

Well, we think the popularity of this cocktail has grown with the popularity of coffee in general. Like most martinis, this cocktail can be made with gin or vodka but our choice would always be gin, of course. Those rich juniper and citrus notes work so well with the complex flavours of the coffee!

With its silky-smooth foam top and sweet, moreish undertones, it’s no wonder this cocktail is so loved.

Martini

Why is it so popular?

James Bond certainly has a lot to do with the popularity of martinis (although we disagree with his famed requested to have it shaken not stirred), but he doesn't get all the credit. With or without Bond, a classic gin Martini cocktail is heavenly, easy to whip up and always looks cool in your hand.

This timeless cocktail will always be popular with gin fans! You just need to get the ratio of gin to vermouth right - we recommend 4 parts gin to 1 part vermouth.

French 75

Why is it so popular?

Gin and prosecco cocktails will always be popular but none seem to be quite as popular as this classic gin and champagne cocktail invented in Paris during the first world word at the New York Bar. Everything about this citrusy, bubbly gin cocktail screams elegance, sophistication and style and, because it’s so easy to make and uses basic ingredients, it’s a great gin cocktail to make at home. Need we say more?

Tom Collins

Why is it so popular?

A combination of gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and soda water, this tall gin cocktail is perfect for sipping through summer and beyond. All that you have to do is pour everything into your glass and mix, and it’s that simplicity and refreshing, citrus-forward flavour profile that has made it a hit over the years. Our mouths water whenever it’s mentioned!

G&T

Why is it so popular?

A G&T is the quintessential gin cocktail and the go-to tipple for most gin-fanatics.

That simple yet effective combination of gin and tonic water is a match made in heaven. And, with the number of tonic waters growing and growing and a seemingly endless number of craft gins and garnishes now available, there are a mind-boggling number of different G&T combinations out there for people to try - especially when you get experimental with your garnishes too. It’s that versatility that makes the G&T so popular, there really is one for everyone.

Race Car

Why is it so popular?

With its golden hue and tongue tantalising mix of citrus-forward gin (ideally Monaco’s La Distillerie de Monaco Gin aux Agrumes), lemon juice, Spuma Polara (a Sicilian mixer with herb, orange and rhubarb flavours) and our bespoke Race Car cocktail syrup, this cocktail really captures the spirit of the sun-kissed Mediterranean. Its ability to transport you to sunny climes with each sip has really captured the imagination of Craft Gin Club members and the wider public.

We are particularly proud of this cocktail appearance on this list as it was invented by our very own Master Mixologist, Maria Vieira.

Gimlet

Why is it so popular?

We think this cocktail is so popular because the combination of gin and lime juice is SO delicious. That mix of fragrant, zesty lime and rich, aromatic gin is pretty unbeatable. One of the original Sour cocktails, the Gimlet is also one of the oldest cocktails on this list.

The story is that it was invented accidentally by Naval doctors. They encouraged sailors to take citrus juice with their gin to help ward off scurvy on long voyages.

Aviation

Aviation gin cocktail

Why is it so popular?

Ok, so Ryan Reynolds and Aviation Gin may be partly responsible for the resurgence in popularity of all things named “Aviation” in the wonderful world of gin but this cocktail can certainly stand on its own two feet. Its flowery, fruity mix of gin, Crème de Violette and Maraschino liqueur has always made it a hit with cocktail connoisseurs.

The Aviation has that winning combination of beautiful looks and sumptuous flavours that will always be popular with gin fans.

With its crisp, clean, refreshing mix of rum, fresh mint leaves, sugar and soda water, it’s a mainstay of almost every cocktail menu in the world. We love creating lots of different gin-based versions of a Mojito because they are really popular amongst the Craft Gin Club team too.
