Give this scrumptious rhubarb and gin cocktail recipe a go!
Gin and rhubarb are a match made in heaven! Those fragrant sweet and tart rhubarb flavours, which we all love with custard (try out our Rhubarb Gin & Custard Tart), are an incredible match for the complex juniper-based flavour profile of a good craft gin.
That’s why this Rhubarb Sour cocktail recipe from Otterbeck Distillery, the distillery behind our September 2021 Gin of the Month, Cotton Garden Gin, has us so excited. Originally made exclusively for Craft Gin Club members, Cotton Garden Gin has wonderful notes of English garden herbs, citrus and juniper, with a delightfully earthy backbone. All of those sumptuous tones complement the fruity rhubarb in this cocktail delightfully.
The fresh lemon juice then adds bright touches of citrus and the quintessential sour tang that we love in a Sour cocktail and the egg white gives you that velvety foam. Yum!
Give this easy gin and rhubarb cocktail recipe a go today - it’s a great way to use up any rhubarb you have left from its season, which usually ends in August in the UK, and it’s also a great way to use any rhubarb you have frozen for safe-keeping!
Rhubarb Sour
50ml Cotton Garden Gin
25ml lemon juice
15ml rhubarb syrup
1 egg white
Rhubarb, to garnish
To make the rhubarb syrup: chop three sticks of rhubarb into small pieces. Add to a pan along with 200ml of water and 100g of sugar. Gently heat, and keep on a low heat for 15-20 minutes, until the rhubarb has softened, but do not let it boil. Pass through a sieve before using.
Add all the ingredients apart from the garnish to a shaker without ice and shake together for ten seconds. Add ice to the shaker and shake hard for 15 more seconds. Fine strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with small slices of rhubarb.
