Here at Craft Gin Club we love a gin sour, so when we came across this amazing layered whiskey version of the cocktail we just had to give it a ginny twist with our favourite spirit!

The New York Sour can be traced back to 1880s Chicago - originally called the Continental Sour - eventually making it’s way to Manhattan where it was popularised and renamed.

This striking drink is made from a base of a gin sour (gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup - very similar to a whisky sour) and topped with a red wine float, which slowly diffuses through the drink, adding a deeper note to the bright citrus. The egg white is optional, but you won’t get the extra layer of creamy foam on top without it.

So go on, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a cocktail connoisseur - challenge yourself!

Red Wine Gin Sour

40ml gin
15ml simple syrup*
25ml lemon juice
1 egg white (optional)
20ml red wine

Combine the gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and egg white in a shaker with no ice, and shake hard to froth up the egg white. Add ice and shake again to chill, then strain into a rocks glass with ice.

Once the foam has begun to settle, carefully pour the red wine down the back of a bar spoon to float it at the top of the glass. Garnish with a twist of orange peel.

Tip: The trick to creating spectacular looking layers in your drink is simple - you just need a spoon! Place it convex side up (like a mound) on the top of the drink and slowly let your liquid drizzle over it. If what you are drizzling is less dense, it will float on top!
