94-year-old gin-loving great-grandmother keeps the nation's spirits up on Twitter during lockdown!
A 94-year-old gin-loving great-grandmother has become an instant online sensation thanks to her hilarious commentary on UK life during lockdown.
Bryony Burrell only set up her Twitter account, @lifeofbryony, on 11 April, but within less than a week her witty ‘Tweetles’ have generated more than half a million likes and earned her a huge online following of almost 60,000 fans!
We are in love with Bryony’s self-deprecating humour - such as her Twitter profile, which states that at “94 years young”, she’s “still got it, but nobody wants to see it!”
In her first ever post, the British great-granny everyone wants explained her reasons for joining the social media channel: “At 94 years old, I never imagined that i'd ever be new to anything again, but i'm new to Twitter! This is my first Tweetle. This will show my grandson that I can get down with the young ones. The only problem I have, is getting back up again!” We love you, Bryony!
However, some of the cheerful pensioner’s most amusing tweets reveal her love of our favourite tipple - gin! In one, she reveals her bafflement at the difference between the modern phenomena of ‘tweeting’ versus ‘twerking’ and concludes she needs a gin - before going on to clarify:
In another, the newbie tweeter also feels the need for a little gin-based recovery after learning about some of the more technical aspects of social media:
However, in among the gin-based funnies that are keeping the nation giggling during the crisis, Bryony is also showing her caring side, sharing her support for NHS workers, those in lockodwn vulnerable to domestic abuse, and awareness for Age UK and their work with the elderly during the Coronavirus-induced government lockdown. As if we couldn’t love this lady any more.
It seems that, along with hero pensioners like Capt Tom Moore, the WWII veteran who has raised a mind-boggling £12 million for the NHS by doing sponsored laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, we are all turning to our older generation for inspiration at this time. We will be raising our gin glasses tonight in honour of all of them. Cheers!
