There are 40,000 lakes across the UK, and each and every one has something amazing to discover. All of that exploring can be thirsty work, so here are the best lakeside spots to enjoy a ginny cocktail.

For Film Lovers: Black Park Lake, Buckinghamshire

You may not have heard of Black Park Lake, but you’ve probably seen it. Situated in Wexham in Buckinghamshire, this lake is a stone’s throw from filmmaking company Pinewood Studios, and is often used as a movie location, appearing in Harry Potter, James Bond, Sleepy Hallow, Dark Knight and Doctor Who. Not only would a visit give you the chance to make a movie cameo, but this park is dog friendly, so your furry friend can come for the adventure, too!

For Nature Addicts: Lake Vyrnwy, Wales

Lake Vyrnwy, situated in the heart of a national nature reservoir and bird sanctuary, is surrounded by over 311 brooks, waterfalls and rivers. With a huge dam and a variety Rapunzel-like towers, the whole area oozes Gothic beauty – and the Rhiwargor Waterfall, which flows into the lake, is beyond beautiful. If you’re not the ‘glamping’ type, the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa is close by and boasts spectacular views of the lake.

For Photography Fanatics: Loch Awe, Scotland

If you’re a budding photographer, Loch Awe is the spot for you. The sheer variety of castle-studded islands make for a great scenic view – and include Kilchurn Castle, which is said to be the most photographed castle in the world! Whether you reach it by boat or would rather walk half a mile over the bridge for a more scenic route, it’s clear to see why Loch Awe is known as the prettiest lake in Scotland.

For Adventurers: Derwentwater, Lake District

With so much to do and see, the Lake District’s Derwentwater is a perfect stop for the adventurous soul. Hire motor boats and rowing boats to explore the lake’s rippling waters, taking in stunning views of Mount Skiddaw as you go. It’s no wonder Beatrice Potter got so much inspiration for her stories on these shores!

For the Historian: Lough MacNean, Northern Ireland

Lough MacNean is situated on the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and history flourishes on its shores. The lake is split in two; the eastern lake, known as the Lower Lough, is on the Republican side, while the western lake, known as the Upper Lough, is within Northern Ireland’s borders. The lake is surrounded by the Glenfarne forest, an emerald embrace which hides to waterfalls, rivers, caves and passages to explore, along with a sculpture trail, featuring the works of artists and locals, that serves as symbolic healing of a troubled political history between the populations either side of the lake.
